What we know about Samsung QNED Smart TVs, the technology that will succeed microLED screens

To this day, Samsung’s most premium line of televisions has microLED technology. And we know that Samsung wants QNED panels to be the future of the sector. We are talking about quantum nanoemitting diode screens that promise enormous image quality.

At the time we informed you that Samsung had patented a new technology (not to be confused with LG solutions) that will enhance colors and offer higher brightness than current OLED panels. Partly thanks to the alignment of the electrodes in the QNED screens.

And now we bring bad news, as several Korean media have just announced that Samsung has had to postpone the installation of its first QNED pilot line. These types of panels will begin to be manufactured in large formats, but we fear that the technology will take longer to arrive than we expected.

Samsung delays the manufacture of its first QNED screens

Everything pointed to Samsung Electronics wanting to start production of a QNED pilot line as soon as possible as they want this technology to succeed microLED. This is why it is so important to start production of the first Quantum Dot Nanorod Light Emitting Diode (QNED) panels. Its main exponent? The nanoparticles in QNEDs are smaller than the LEDs used in microLED televisions.

According to Korean sources, Samsung has been secretly working on QNED technology in which GaN Nanorod (blue light emitting particles) will replace the blue sub-pixels of the OLED What backlit or light emitters. The advantages of QNED technology over QD-OLED are several: greater efficiency energetic, enhanced brightness (blue OLED sub-pixel light limit problem is over), longer panel life and complete eradication of burn-in and retention problem. Furthermore, since it is expected that GaN Nanorods are much more stable than the materials used to manufacture the blue sub-pixel of OLEDs, encapsulation (using a very thin film on top) of the sub-pixels will not be required. GaN Nanorods.

QNED

And what does it mean? Speaking more mundanely: not being covered by “nothing”, the brightness that will be achieved will be much higher than the current OLEDs from LG and QD-OLEDs from Samsung. Also, quantum dots (Quantum Dots) will still be used in the color conversion process for the red and green pixels, since the native emission color of the Nanorods is expected to be blue.

Samsung Display was originally scheduled to install a QNED pilot line in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, in the fourth quarter of last year or the first quarter of this year, but the plan has been delayed. which Samsung will redevelop QNED technology at the laboratory level, so you may have seen that they can get better results.

Of course, it is good that Samsung wants to improve its QNED solutions so that the first “batch” is of the best quality, but obviously it will mean a delay in its launch. The industry pointed out that mass production of this type of panel would start in 2024 or 2025. Now, with this change in plans, production will be delayed to 2025 or 2026.

Now, Samsung Electronics will have to review its strategy within the Smart TV market, since the delay of the QNED project has completely changed its roadmap. And we are very afraid that Samsung’s first QNED TVs will take a bit longer to hit the market.
