Android files a petition for Apple after Drake sings about how “texts turn green”

Even if you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard that Drake surprised his seventh studio album, honestly, never mind, out on June 17th, and you may have even heard that the track “Tex Go Green” sparked an old iPhone versus Android debate. On June 18, Android released an “Unofficial Song Explainer” detailing how Apple could be eliminating green texts between iPhone and Android users forever, and appears to be the company’s RCS suggestion. There would be an easy solution. But what is RCS messaging, and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know.

At this point, it’s pretty common knowledge that text conversations between iPhone and Android users appear green on iPhones, as opposed to the standard blue chat bubble that pops up in iMessage but Drake’s “Tex Go Green” “I am not mentioning it. If you’re a dedicated Android user, let me tell you a little secret: If an iPhone user is blocked by another iPhone user, the blocked person can still send messages but the other person can send them messages. won’t be able to see until They unblock the person. And when that happens, any messages sent by the blocked person to the person who blocked them while they were blocked will turn green and arrive as a text. TL; DR: If you’re messaging an iPhone user and see that your message turns green, you may have blocked them when you sent it, so the line “Texts turn green / It’s a little different Happens, doesn’t it?” Drake also referenced green texts in 2020’s “Chicago Freestyle,” according to Genius, so apparently it’s been bothering him for a while.

In true Drake fashion, the moody track about heartbreak and lost love has lingered on in the hearts of millions, and it’s a “separate hit” for so many that Android was still in his emotions after the song was dropped.

On June 18, the company posted a 38 second song explainer on twitter “Tex Go Green” is voiced by a robotic female voice (which sounds very similar to Siri, BTW) on the instrument, to explain that it’s always hard to get green text, but it doesn’t have to be Is. In a very subtle call-out to Apple, the voice says, “If only some super talented engineering team at Apple would fix this. Because this is a problem that only Apple can fix.”

The Voice goes on to provide one possible solution, stating, “They really have to adopt RCS.”

According to Make Use Off, RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is a messaging protocol that replaces SMS (Short Message Service) and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) that can be used on Android via the Google Messages app, And Android Messages looks and feels similar to other dedicated messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Google Hangouts and more. Instead of relying on your carrier’s network to send messages like SMS and MMS, RCS uses your phone’s mobile data or Wi-Fi connection to send messages more efficiently, as long as the receiver also has RCS. Are.

RCS gives Android users access to features such as a read receipt, a typing indicator, message responses, and it allows users to send and receive files up to 105 MB in size for high resolution pictures and videos all Similar features iMessage users have too, btw.

Apple, on the other hand, famously sends its messages through iMessage. Like RCS, iMessage comes with convenient messaging features like typing indicator and read receipts, and allows users to send messages over Wi-Fi or cellular data. However, despite their similarities, iMessage can only be used in Apple products (iPhone, iPad, Mac, or iPod Touch), and is therefore not compatible with RCS. So even if an Android user sends a message to an iPhone user with RCS, the message will still show up as a green text bubble.

The song interpreter is basically a plea for Apple to switch from Android to RCS (except for blocked texts, of course – sorry, Drake). The video also claims that adopting the platform will “make texting even more secure.” RCS and iMessages are both encrypted, but SMS and MMS are not. Elite Daily reached out to Apple for comment on the video and whether the company ever explored RCS messaging, but did not hear back at the time of publication.

It doesn’t seem like Apple will be overhauling its messaging system anytime soon, but one silver lining may be your iPhone friends’ green texts to actually tell you they once blocked you. As Drake says, “Hit a little different, right?”
