The Apple Newton makes a cameo appearance in For All Mankind and had to be custom built with an iPhone inside.
The third season of ‘For All Mankind’ is now available on Apple TV + and in it we find a nod to Apple in the form of a classic device which unfortunately did not work. This third season of the series is set in the 1990s with a billionaire who wants to explore Mars and we have been able to see the field of a very old Apple product: the Newton MessagePad.
The Newton MessagePad is a forerunner of the iPhone or iPad, with a touch screen and handwriting recognition, was a digital agenda ahead of its time. And precisely because of its futuristic concept, the producers of the series thought it would be a good idea. incorporate the old Apple device and give it a leading role in the series.

However, they decided to make a number of important changes. For example, they gave ability to make video calls thanks to a top accessory with a camera, something that was not possible at the time. In addition, it also incorporates in the series a color screensomething the original Newton MessagePad didn’t have either.
This is how they designed the new Newton MessagePad in ‘For All Mankind’
Ben McGinnis, one of the producers of For All Mankind, shared on Twitter how they shot the scenes using the Newton MessagePad for video calls. The team created a special case based on the Newton that fits an iPhone 12 Pro Max.
They also invented a fake accessory that is basically an external webcam that can be connected to the Newton MessagePad. Some of the scenes show the classic Newton interface, but the ones with video calls were made on an iPhone.
