In surprising news, public blockchain company Solana has announced a new smartphone. The Solana Saga is touted as a flagship-level Android smartphone that will offer a unique set of features integrated with the Solana blockchain. As you might expect from such integration, Saga will be able to transact easily and securely, while also being able to manage digital assets.
Manufactured by OSOM, coming in Q1 2023
During an event in New York, Solana debuted Saga with a framework for Android that would allow developers to build mobile experiences for wallets and apps, called the Solana Mobile Stack. While the underlying feel may be from Solana, the Saga hardware is designed and built by OSOM. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because the company is made up of former Essentials staff. The firm teased a new smartphone last year, announcing that its OSOM OV1 would arrive sometime in the last quarter of 2022.
Jason Keats, co-founder and CEO of OSOM, said:
Saga starts from first principles to create a mobile experience for individuals, developers and ecosystem participants that opens up a new era of mobility. The world needs new hardware to embrace the future of Web3, and building an ecosystem that looks to the future without the burden of legacy ecosystems of the past is extremely exciting to us. ,
The Solana Saga will feature a 6.67-inch display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, 12GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage. The most striking feature will be its software, which relies on the Solana mobile stack, which provides the security and capabilities of Web3. In case you are wondering, the phone almost looks like the OSOM OV1. Pre-orders for the device are now open, with a $100 deposit placed in line for you. The handset will cost $1000 and is expected to arrive in Q1 2023.
