Vous en avez beaucoup ! (2023) – critique du film [Canal+]. Une comédie typique sur la mentalité polonaise

The movie “You’re in luck!” tells the story of the Bednarski family, who learn that their deceased grandfather Józef (Mikołaj Grabowski) was buried with a winning lottery ticket. To get the fortune, the relatives must dig out the coffin and recover the ticket, which won’t be as easy as it seems.

On the way to their goal, they encounter many obstacles, such as a priest (Marian Dziędziel), Józef’s degenerate son (Piotr Głowacki) or the deceased’s fiancée Leokadia (Iwona Bielska) who is reluctant to cooperate. In the meantime, we get to know two Bednarski families: an urban and a rural one, which differ not only in their lifestyle, but also in their political and religious views..

The movie “You’re in luck!” is the feature debut of Mateusz Głowacki, who previously co-wrote the script for the popular romantic comedy “Planeta Singli”. The director focuses on a simple and universal idea for a comedy about the Polish mentality, which is full of contradictions, hypocrisy and greed.

You’ve got a lot! (2023) – movie review [Canal+]. A film full of contradictions

There is no shortage of satirical references to current social and political problems, such as the divisions into left and right, the issue of abortion or the cult of John Paul II. Some of these jokes are accurate and funny, while others are far-fetched and tasteless. The film also has its weaknesses. First of all, it suffers from uneven humor and script. Some of the dialogues are brilliant and witty, while others are banal and predictable. Some situations are absurd and funny, others far-fetched and artificial. Some characters are believable and likable, while others are clichéd and irritating. The film also fails to maintain the right balance between comedy and drama. Sometimes it is too light and shallow, sometimes too heavy and moralistic.

“You’re in luck!” has quite a rich and diverse cast that consists of experienced and lesser-known actors. Some of them are better, others worse, but overall, the acting is not the strongest point of the film. Positive exceptions include Izabela Kuna, who plays Halina, the mother of the city’s Bednarski family. The actress gives her character credibility and naturalness, and is also able to evoke sympathy and laughter from the viewer. Sonia Bohosiewicz, who plays Dorota, Halina’s sister and the wife of town Bednarski, does a similarly good job. Bohosiewicz plays the role of a woman with a strong character and opinions, who is not afraid of confrontation with others.

Robert Wabich, who plays Halina’s husband, is less convincing. Głowacki’s performance is also not the best and he cannot cope with the character of Adam, the degenerate son of the deceased Józef, who wants to grab the entire fortune for himself. Wabich is Krzysztof, Halina’s husband and father. Both actors cannot give their characters the appropriate depth and emotion, and their dialogues are artificial and simply unfunny.. The biggest disappointment, however, is the performance of Mikołaj Grabowski, who plays Józef’s deceased grandfather. Grabowski only appears in a few flashback and dream scenes, but even in these short moments he is unable to create an interesting and memorable character. His grandfather Józef is flat and bland, and his relationship with his family is unclear.

You’ve got a lot! (2023) – movie review [Canal+]. The sound is ok, but what about the humor?

You've got a lot!

Soundtrack “You’re in luck!” is one of its strongest elements. The film uses well-selected music and sound effects that emphasize the mood and atmosphere of the scenes. The music is varied and suited to different situations and characters. Here you will find both dynamic and energetic songs, as well as calm and nostalgic melodies. The sound effects are realistic and believable, and can evoke laughter or tension at the right moments. You can simply hear what the actors are saying, so you don’t have to play with the remote control all the time. And humor?

Humor is a fundamental element of any comedy, especially the black comedy that this picture tries to be. Unfortunately, in this case the humor is rather weak and ineffective. The film cannot make the viewer truly laugh, but only a smile of pity or embarrassment. Well, maybe there are a few nice scenes, but most of the movie is typical boredom.

The film relies on several types of humor that are often repetitive and predictable. So, situational humor (it involves creating absurd and comic situations), verbal humor (it involves creating funny dialogues and verbal jokes) and character humor (it involves creating funny characters and their characteristic features, such as accent, appearance, behavior or views). In every case, the film is average. At first it gives some hope, only to then take it away.

You’ve got a lot! (2023) – movie review [Canal+]. Average and boring

Humor in “You’ve Got It!” it is uneven and inconsistent. He cannot maintain the appropriate level of humor. The script isn’t top-notch either. Some scenes are absurd and funny, while others are far-fetched and artificial. Dialogues are brilliant and witty, while others are banal and predictable. Some characters are believable and likable, while others are clichéd and irritating. The film is sometimes entertaining, but most of it is boring. Personally, I think it’s a boring and mediocre comedy that doesn’t bring anything new to the genre. She is very cautious, but maybe that was to be expected from the director’s feature debut. People looking for intelligent and original humor have nothing to look for here.
