Just last year, the Spanish government began to use extreme alerts in order to notify the person who may be close to an earthquake as quickly as possible, such as the one that has happened in turkey. Android was also updated last year with a similar measure for earthquakes and that you have available from your mobile.

Google has a whole page full of earthquake early warnings. An extraordinary event that according to its magnitude can become devastating. For this reason, our mobiles have been updated to provide a system capable of launching the warning just in those minutes in which a correct decision can be the difference between life and death.

This system is available on Android and sends earthquake alerts in cases of magnitude 4.5 or higher. There are two very different alerts: one for weak or slight tremors and another for moderate or extreme.

In other words, depending on the magnitude of the earthquake you can find one or the other. It is quite clear that the notice in redAt the moment you open the mobile, it will recommend that you take the appropriate measures in the shortest possible time, such as immediately drop to the ground, cover yourself with a solid structure and hold it as best you can.

Both are available based on the magnitude of the earthquake. The first for tremors of 3 and 4 degrees on the MMI scale during an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 or higher, while the second is only sent with tremors of 5 or higher on the MMI scale.

The difference between the two alerts is that one respects the volume settings and that do not disturb mode, while the second will ignore them so that you quickly take the smartphone and follow the instructions.

Thanks to the fact that Google updated Android through Google Play Services, the vast majority of mobile phones have mini seismometers that are capable of detecting the presence of an earthquake.

It is always important to take a few seconds to go through the phone settings and thus check that we have activated the earthquake alarm at follow these steps:

  • You have to go to Security and emergency.
  • We look up “Earthquake Alerts.”
  • Once inside we make sure that the “Earthquake Alerts” option is active.

Even further down those options we can perform a demo to see how our mobile makes the alert and thus even keep the sound of it. Yes, it is true that Google warns that not all alerts are available in all areas, not all earthquakes are detected or that the alert can be received right after.

These settings on mobile are usually in the same location

Be that as it may, checking the mobile to certify that it has the earthquake alert does not take more than a few seconds, so from these lines we recommend you go through that configuration.

We also warn that these settings may not be on your mobile and you should update it to the latest version of Android; just as they can be present from other sections. In our case we have used a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.
