The Google Pixel Watch has been rumored for years, but leaks have gotten thicker and faster over the past few days as we get closer to its anticipated debut at May’s Google I/O 2022 event.
Not only has a familiar-looking test unit found in a restaurant, but there’s talk of multiple models, and with “limited” availability for Google’s first smartwatch, priced between $300 and $400.
Now sources at 9to5Google have spilled some interesting information about the internals of the watch. First, the Pixel Watch will apparently feature cellular connectivity, which means it won’t need to use your phone as a bridge. But more interestingly, the same sources have provided the battery capacity: 300 mAh.
It’s unclear whether this capability will be in line with the rumored multiple models of the Pixel Watch, but a battery that’s size suggests the wearable is probably seeing a run time of around 36 hours between charges. Granted, a battery capacity can’t tell you that the Fitbit Sense lasts six days on a 266mAh cell but based on what we know, less than two days seems more likely.
That’s because like last year’s Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, the Pixel Watch is almost certain to run Wear OS 3. Samsung’s wearable comes in two sizes: a 40mm version with a 247mAh battery and a 44mm model with a 361mAh cell. Stamina proved inconsistent across both models in our tests – which could possibly be why the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has a 572 mAh battery – but Samsung promises “up to 40 hours” for both, so that figure is the Pixel Watch. Will offer the same duration between charges.
There’s also talk of the Pixel Watch using the same W920 chip as Samsung’s most recent wearable, which would imply nearly identical performance and stamina certainly considering each’s potentially unique features, variations in sensor and screen size. Excluding.
We should really know more about the Pixel Watch very soon. Google I/O starts in Mountain View in just 12 days’ time, and the wearable is expected to appear widely, albeit only in the form of a teaser for what’s to come. Indeed, leaker John Prosser believes that’s all we’re getting for now. “The Pixel Watch will be formally announced and [then] Launched in October alongside Pixel 7 and 7 Pro,” he tweeted.
