On the occasion of the release, now ever closer, of the spin-off TV series Game of Thrones: House of the Dragonproduced by HBO, George RR Martin announced the upcoming release of a completely new bookalways set in the huge universe he created, that is Game of Thrones: The Rise of the Dragon.
The book ties into the upcoming spin-off and is described as “An illustrated history of the Targaryen dynasty, Which will also dominate the scenes in the series and is one of the most important dynasties of the saga. Both the TV show and the book will focus on the politically controversial family.
Game of Thrones: The Rise of the Dragon will offer to readers over 180 unpublished illustrationsand it will be “steeped in the tradition of the Westeros“. The release in bookstores is scheduled for October 2022. HBO has previously confirmed that too House of the Dragon will make its debut this year, but a launch window has not yet been revealed.

Think of The Rise of the Dragon as a deluxe book, in which the best known family of the Westeros – and their dragons – comes to life in collaboration with some truly extraordinary artists. Fire and Blood has been described as the grandparents’ account of the events that characterized Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros, leading to the infamous Dance of Dragons, the civil war that nearly nullified the Targaryen rule. The Rise of the Dragon will cover the same time period, but is written in a more encyclopedic style, similar to A Song of Ice and Fire. In fact, the authors are Elio M. Garca, Jr and Linda Antonsson, and they all returned to help in the new book.
Martin used his blog to confirm that the production of House of the Dragon it is already finished and that, in fact, some episodes have been overhauled and have already been cut, although much work still needs to be done. HBO was optimistic about the production of several seasonssuggesting that, if the show is successful (which is practically certain), the works will follow.
