What is Google’s Look to Speak app and how does it work?

(pocket-lint) – Google has an app called Look to Speak, which lets users communicate using just their eye movement and their phone’s front-facing camera. It was recently promoted with a heartwarming ad that went along with the Oscars.

But how does this app work, what is it for and how can you access it? let’s find out.

What is Google Look to Speak?

Look to Speak is an app that allows you to select from a list of phrases using just your eye movement, then the app speaks these phrases aloud. It is designed to help people with motor function impairment and speech difficulties to communicate more easily.

The app is part of Google’s ‘Start with One’ project on the ‘Experiments with Google’ platform. Start With One is a collection of experiments that begin by working with one person to create something impactful for them and their community. In this case, Google sought the help of Sarah Ezekiel, an artist suffering from motor neurone disease.

Google says “Hopefully Look to Speak will be helpful for communities with a variety of temporary, permanent or situational disabilities.”

How to Use Google Look to Speak

Look to Speak is an app that is available for Android users through the Google Play Store. It is free to use and does not require in-app sign in.

How to Use Google Look to Speak

Look to Speak is nice and simple to use. You’ll need to allow it access to your device’s camera when you open the app, as it’s needed to track your eye movements.

Once this is done, you will see onscreen instructions that walk you through the steps of communication through Look to Speak.

Briefly, you are presented with a collection of phrases divided into two columns.

If the phrase you want is in the left column, you look from the edge of the screen to the left to make a selection.

Then, all the phrases on the left are split into two columns and you can repeat the process as before.

This continues until only the phrase you choose is left and it will then be spoken aloud.

At any time, viewing the top of the screen will cancel an action. Looking above can also put the app in snooze mode.

In snooze mode, the app can be unlocked through a sequence of eye movements when you want to continue communication.
