Firefox will seek to solve one of the web’s biggest privacy problems

This is possible using a technique that limits cookies to the site where they were created, so they cannot be tracked when you open a different website.

According to Mozilla, Total Cookie Protection aims to solve one of the internet’s biggest privacy problems. Have you ever wondered why you see ads on Instagram about things you Googled or related to sites you just browsed? Third-party cookies used by ad servers track your behavior and create a profile to generate personalized advertising.

The hyper-targeted ads you see so often online are made possible by cookies that are used to track your behavior across sites and create an extremely sophisticated profile of who you are.

The protection of cookies from Firefox creates a “cookie jar” for every website you visit and limit crawlers to analyzing your behavior only in that jar. Total Cookie Protection prevents tracking when you navigate to another website, since the browser will create a new jar. In practical terms, this feature will reduce the amount of information companies collect about usso we will stop seeing invasive ads.

Mozilla claims that no website can access external cookie containers, so the privacy of users is guaranteed. Total Cookie Protection is the evolution of Tracking Protection, an option launched in 2015 as part of Firefox’s private browsing that blocked ads, analytics trackers, and social media buttons that analyzed your behavior and collected data without you noticing.

The company has experimented with various models to protect users’ privacy when browsing Firefox. In addition to Total Cookie Protection or Private browsing, Firefox has other tricks up its sleeve such as facebook-container. this extension prevents Meta from following your movements on the web, isolating your activity so Mark Zuckerberg’s harvesters don’t steal your data. Firefox Focus is also offered, a mobile browser that eliminates all our activity when we close it.

Firefox’s new cookie protection will be enabled by default to all users. While this feature would ensure safe browsing, it doesn’t hurt to take a few precautions. The most important step when we enter a website for the first time is do not press “Yes, I accept” to the cookie notice.

By law, the sites offer a button to configure them and a detailed report on the purpose of the cookies. Some websites try to play down the importance of cookie settings by making the button less obvious, small letters or try to confuse the user. It’s always good to take an extra minute to reject all those related to ads and personalized contentstatistics or measurement.
